Brian The Courier also brought us some lovely handmade silver goodness from a girl called mike.

They'll be in stock when we reopen on Tuesday 31st January.

If you follow us on Facebook you'll be aware that we are open today (Friday 27th) but then shall be closed for the weekend.

This is because I'm having a small pity party.

This has involved fairy bread on a couple of occasions.

Last Monday I had over 20 Sunspots burned/frozen off my hands, arms and face. I am a bit of a wuss and a chicken plus I think that I look as though I may be a victim of the bubonic plague - I just simply don't feel up to leaving the apartment yet.

One of the zillion reasons I love my shop is because the buck stops with me I guess.

Whilst I am sincerely sorry if our being closed Saturday & Sunday inconveniences anyone at all, I really strongly believe in putting health & happiness first. I'll be totally fine & am not fishing for sympathy I assure you - it's just superficial and I'm so glad I have had them all removed! I just felt I owed an explanation I suppose.

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?

My name is Emma and my range is called Emma Makes.

Where are you located?

I live in Featherston, which is a small (pop: 2000) town in South Wairarapa, an hours train ride from Wellington, New Zealand.

How long have you been creating your lush wares?

I've always been making things but have been selling as Emma Makes for around four years. My range grows and changes depending on what people want and what I enjoy making.

Do you currently have a favourite item in your range?

I love all my notebooks and pencils - mainly because I'm a real list maker and they're useful although I only let myself have the seconds; ones with flaws that I can't sell. My favourite pencil changes all the time but right now it's 'Stay Gold Ponyboy', which is a quote from The Outsiders.

(That's our favourite too!)

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

I can't really stop - I always have ideas for new products and selling my work and have people love it is a huge motivation too.

Are you someone who generally tends to buy Handmade over mass produced? Why?

I love buying handmade because I know the effort that goes into it. I have a couple of favourite shops that stock lots of handmade and think it just makes a better present than mass produced.

Do you have any new items in the pipe works that you'd like to hint to us about?

I always have new ideas for notebooks and pencils - I'm thinking of creating new notebooks based on giant letters because I love fonts.

We have reopened as of today slightly less full of stock than I'd like. That being said, there is so much on it's way, soon I'll be stressing about squeezing everything in!

Yesterday, our courier Brian brought our deliveries to our home front door as the shop was closed.

Now that is service!

Hey. I've not blogged much lately as December is the busiest time of year for Blackbird. We spend a lot (a lot) of time making stock to fill most of our racks ourselves plus handprint our packaging. Also harassing (hee hee) our gorgeous suppliers of handmade delights is quite time consuming too. December 2011 was our best month ever so we're pretty stoked with ourselves right now.

And exhausted.

Happy exhausted though.

We did manage a couple of moments of relaxation between Xmas and NYE. Had a delicious meal at Goldbergs with some lovely close friends visiting from Sydney. We were going to go to Frankies Place (our favourite Darby Street Cafe) but it was Boxing Day & it was closed - like most cafes that day. And rightfully so! We all need time off!

Had the obligatory beer or three at The Oriental pub in Cooks Hill.

And, naturally, I got the "summer flu" that's been going around. It started on Xmas Day & has stuck with me still, although am feeling heaps heaps heaps better than I was! I've been told by several people that it is my body forcing relaxation on me. That seems unfair! I was quite happy to relax minus the phlegm & mucus thanks all the same!

Pepper was happy though as she has had so many cuddles & built a nest on my quilt on the lounge at one stage! Despite being ill I had to work last Thursday, as Sean was committed elsewhere, and I whined about it on Facebook. One of our very sweet regulars actually bought me in some eucalyptus lollies for my sore throat! I was so grateful & it cheered me up immensely.

Unfortunately, due to a cause I'm rather passionate about and openly involved in, I've had to interact with some rather negative humans in the last couple of months. People I'd never usually give the time of day because their minds are seemingly closed and inflexible.

Instead of sticking to the facts and focussing on what we disagree about, I've received a bit of flack & some quite derogative personal comments in public forums from these people.

People I don't know & who don't know me.

It's been a little intimidating to be totally honest.

I'm so very blessed that Blackbird Corner gives me a "bubble" where I generally encounter only friendly, intelligent and empathetic people. Interacting with visitors to our shop reminds me that the vast majority of Novocastrians (and people from elsewhere both Nationally and Internationally) are empathetic, passionate people who care about the environment, respecting local history and being involved in their Communities.

Most people are good.

We try to believe that.

So, I understand you'll think me crazy to have bothered spending my Sunday morning wrapping the traffic light pole outside our shop in granny squares? Fair call.

"I've been plastic obsessed since 2004. Since then my focus has been on creating original jewellery, although I have made the odd Tupperware dress. My father was a jeweller and my mother was a Tupperware Lady, so I guess this career was inevitable!"

"Liana was born in Sydney and is now based in Brisbane, Australia.

Since moving location Liana's artistic practice has seen a focus on the design and handcrafted production of contemporary Jewellery."

"Liana's background is broad ranging with experience in ceramics, photography, painting, fibre arts, costume design and the performing arts. Liana has completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the UNSW majoring in English and Theatre Studies."

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?

My name is Holly Leonardson however my artist moniker is Pannikin, which was taken from the name of the street I grew up in as a little kid.

Where are you located?

Brisbane, QLD.

How long have you been creating your lush wares?

I have been creating under the name Pannikin since 2007 but since then my style has evolved - my new range of wearable art accessories launched late October this year, however I have so many more plans I can't wait to unveil.

Do you currently have a favourite item in your range?

Hard to say, I think the Pup-Pup brooch because he looks so forlorn and perhaps the Scout brooch as she was the first illustration to be turned into a wood cut.

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

I would go crazy if I had to stop. I don't feel like myself when I haven't been using my hands to make something, whether it is drawing, painting, sewing, crafting or baking.

Are you someone who generally tends to buy Handmade over mass produced? Why?

Team Handmade! There is just so much more character to handmade pieces, I like knowing that someone sat down and spent some quality time to create the piece and that they enjoyed it. I am a bit of a collector (okay, a huge collector!), so there is no bigger thrill to receive a package in the mail from an artist you admire so much. You can't buy that at Kmart!

Do you have any new items in the pipe line that you'd like to hint to us about?

Our very dear friend, Artist/Photographer Shana from Doll Eyes, popped into the shop late last week & left with a big bag full of Anorak Tees + an arm full of animal masks from our sizeable collection. The result was a delightful assortment of photos featuring her Sisters-in-Laws and her lovely hubby Pat.

I simply had to share some with you here!

We are so very blessed to have such lovely, creative, inspiring friends. Friends that we wouldn't have met had it not been for opening Blackbird Corner.

Newcastle next weekend!

Ticket prices to each session are just $15/$10 concession and there will be a Gold Pass to all sessions at a discount of $48/$34 concession.

Seam is on it's way! Hurray!

A new independent magazine supporting young and emerging creative folk will launch nationally in Brisbane on October 30th.

Editor Linsey Rendell will launch the first issue of Seam Magazine at an intimate event at Brew in the city.

“Seam Magazine is a creativity-‐based indie magazine covering fashion, art, craft, design, music, travel and food, with the first issue focusing on start-‐up independent designers, artists and creatives,” Linsey said.

“We want to showcase and tell the stories of the lesser-‐known creative individuals in Australia and overseas, people who are starting to climb the ladder in their particular craft.

“Book, zine and product reviews are also included in the magazine, along with fashion shoots featuring handmade garments and accessories from emerging Australian designers, with a touch of vintage mixed in for good measure.

“An independent magazine is a great platform to help start-‐ups gain exposure, showing how unique and inspiring their work is through a like-‐minded medium.”

Seven months of planning, interviews, photo shoots, writing and editing will finally take shape with the release of Seam’s The Start-‐Ups issue.

And with planning for issue two already underway, there’s no rest for Linsey.

“It’s been an exciting and challenging year, and I’m so grateful for the support that I’ve received from family, friends and industry professionals.

“I’ve been inspired by so many creative people during the process of making Seam, and everyone I’ve met along the way has been so friendly and encouraging.”

Seam Magazine will be sold all around Australia at independent bookstores, fashion and craft boutiques as well as online.

I really like getting better at what I do, even after 4 years, I’m still learning, and some of the mistakes I’ve made along the way have led to some of my best ideas.

Always! There is nothing like buying and giving gifts that are handmade. You can see the love, thought and care in anything hand made and that’s a real gift.

We are besotted with Lilac and Snow

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?
I'm Kathryn, and my label is Lilac & Snow. I chose the name mostly because I like the way it sounds. I also love snow from afar - snow is something I long to see, as I never have outside of pictures.

Where are you located?
In sunny and gorgeous Newcastle. Just a short stroll away from your lovely shop!

How long have you been creating your lush wares?
I have been making jewellery for a little under a year. I am moving a bit more into paper goods right now (which is what I first intended to be doing - but I found that making jewellery was a lot of fun and got a bit side-tracked!), and have always enjoyed drawing and playing around with paper.

Do you currently have a favourite item in your range?
At the moment I really like the little notebooks (which your lovely customers can purchase from you at Blackbird Corner!) because they are my first step in the direction I'd like to take things. I also love making earrings, pins, and rings, etc. from vintage components - putting them together is a lot of fun! I really love the trio of "Little Folk" Pins which are made from vintage cabochons featuring cute Holly Hobbie style children.

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

My lovely supportive partner who encourages me without exception; the inspiration of seeing other artsy/ crafty folk doing what they love; the desire to have some kind of independence and liberation from an increasingly disposable society; and the simple love of making!

Are you someone who generally tends to buy Handmade over mass produced? Why? Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm far too poor to buy much of anything these days! But when I do, I much prefer to buy something that I know was handmade by someone who cared about what they were doing. I love to support people doing what they love, and quite often handmade products are far more interesting and unique than those that are mass produced.

Do you have any new items in the pipe line that you'd like to hint to us about? Hmmm... I can hint about resin and additions to our "Naturalist" range of jewellery... Also, some new book designs are on the way :)

Red Wagon has been around for about 7 years, just over the past 2 years it has been re-launched with new products

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?
I love the childhood era of the 1950's and working with creating new products that reflect that era. My passion comes from seeing how this era is always talked about and how i can keep the vintage feel with our products. Our products are loved by all ages.

I love to buy handmade unique products as I know how much work is involved in making handmade products.

3143 days....and counting

My Sean has a few quirks you could say.

One is that he takes his own photo everyday.

He has been doing this for over 8 1/2 years now.

That's almost half of the time that we've been together.

We've lived in three homes over that time, fortunately they've all had the requisite white wall.

I'm not sure if it's because I know him so well or not, but I can tell what was going on in our lives at the time from the look in his eyes in the photos.

I actually feel a bit weird about sharing this, as it feels really personal, but he has spent so long creating it that just keeping it to myself seemed a waste.

Oh and he's still doing it. It's a compulsion.

A stroll down Whiskers Lane

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?

I'm Jodie and I'm the crafter behind Whiskers Lane. The name Whiskers Lane came about for obvious whiskered creature loving reasons and also the vision of my logo. The elements of my logo came to mind and a dear talented family friend made Whiskers Lane come alive through illustration. I like to imagine that Whiskers Lane is a real place like in the illustration :)

I'm located in South Sydney - in a little place called the Shire and no I'm not a hobbit :)

Just a few months shy off 2 years now. Wow that has flown by!

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

Mainly the love and support of handmade lovers out there. The ones that buy my designs and give me compliments keeps me motivated. Knowing that there are fellow creative folk out there doing what they love also gives me a boost. There's this whole little connected crafting world out there it's amazing :)

Are you someone who generally tends to buy handmade over mass produced? Why?

Yes, I definitely. I love supporting the handmade world. You know when a lot of time, effort,love and care has gone into designing and making an item so it's a good feeling to support other crafters. I know how long items can take to make and it makes me feel happy that I'm paying for the creativity & craftsmanship from one hard-working individual.

Do you have any new items in the pipe works that you'd like to hint to us about?

Yes!! Some of my new designs are on my website right NOW! Let's just say whisker and tea lovers are going to adore me hehe :) Oh some ceramic friends may make an appearance too...

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?

Hi, I'm Jess, the creator/editor/publisher of *bespoke* zine! When I first decided to create *bespoke*, I wanted a name that summed up the crafty, creative vibe I was going for. I asked around on a few forums, and with the help of my crafty friends, settled on the word bespoke. The asterisks were suggested almost jokingly my my friend Deb, but I liked them so much that they stuck!

Where are you located?

I live on 6 1/2 acres about an hour north of Brissie, in Queensland. My husband and I live in 2 converted rooms in a barn, and my parents have a house on the property. We'll get around to building our own house one day... when I'm not so busy, maybe!

How long have you been creating your lush wares?

*bespoke* was launched in October last year, and has been going strong ever since. We're up to Issue 4 now, with Issue 5 coming out in mid-to-late November - maybe we should have a big birthday party!

Do you currently have a favourite item in your range?

Every issue is like a baby, so I can't pick my favourite... though there is an awesome feature on collaborations in Issue 5 that I'm pretty excited about.

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

Since I run a full-time jewellery business as well as *bespoke*, it can be hard to keep on top of everything - but the Aussie creative community is so awesome, and their enthusiasm for *bespoke* is what keeps me going when I feel a bit overwhelmed.

Are you someone who generally tends to buy Handmade over mass produced? Why?

Absolutely! I've been immersed in the handmade movement for years now, and Etsy & Madeit are my go-to places online when I want to buy anything. I just love the personal touch that handmade has - and I love supporting other people like me who are living their dream of creating for a living!

Do you have any new items in the pipe works that you'd like to hint to us about?

Well, I would love to do a *bespoke* calendar next year (for 2012) featuring some of the amazing artists who've been a part of the zine, so we'll see!

Who are you & why is your range called what it is called?

I am Ellie Smith, and I put together Extra Curricular magazine - named so because it is about people getting creative with their spare time.

Where are you located?

Extra Curricular is New Zealand based, but covers NZ and Aussie - contributors live in both countries - and I am currently in London!

How long have you been creating your lush wares? The magazine has been going for two years. Before I started Extra Curricular I also did a lot of screen printing, which is on hold for the moment while I'm overseas.

What motivates you to keep crafting/creating?

I feel like the more I make, the better quality my work is - that goes for my illustration, screen printing and putting together the magazine as well. When I look back at some of the things I made for my first market, they look so amateur! So the motivation is to hone my skills and keep getting better.

Are you someone who generally tends to buy Handmade over mass produced? Why?

I think it comes down to that good feeling you get - you know you're helping out other independent sellers, and the shopping experience is much nicer, whether it's at a market, online or at a great little store like Blackbird Corner. The item itself has more character, it's better made, and it gives me far more pleasure than something made in a factory far away. The way we spend our money is one of the strongest ways we can stand up for our values. Because buying quality products often costs more, I justify it to myself by buying less - which can't be a bad thing either.

Do you have any new items in the pipe works that you'd like to hint to us about?

Issue 7 is dropping on November 24th. It's the summer one and has a jewellery featurette and a picnic theme.

Do you also sell online?

Yes, we send magazines off on exciting journeys to many faraway places.

Hello! My name is Anthea & I'm the creator & Editor of Spoonful, a happiness companion! Spoonful is meant to be short enough to read on a bus or a train ride & make you feel happy by the end... it's short but delicious (just like a spoonful of something scrumptious!) and of course there's the Mary Poppins reference of 'Just a Spoonful of Sugar helps the medicine go by' as we are all about helping readers survive the medicine that life hands out!!

Difficult question, but I think I'd have to confess to loving the latest issue - though the newest issue is often my favourite :) Issue 5 is packed with some truly beautiful writing and delicious artwork too!

ABSOLUTELY! I don't think you can beat the magic and the honour of holding something handmade in your hands. Not only is it usually an object of beauty, but it's something with a story, a history... hours went into making it, hours of love usually and passion which shine through a handmade piece. Plus you have the knowledge that you are supporting an artist/crafter/creator live a passionate happy & creative life which is unbeatable. We try to work with as many writers, crafters and artists as possible with Spoonful to support creative living and remarkable talent! I've been quiet on this blog for a few reasons.

Ms Pepper Puppy would have to top the list.

She is only a baby so requires constant attention & devotion.

So that's what we've been giving her.

She has decided that my new Birkis are her most favourite place to nap. If they're unavailable under or behind a lounge cushion comes a close second.

She tries to squeeze her whole head in!

I promised to share puppy pics.

Ms Pepper is sometimes in the shop/sometimes at home.

Because she's only 6 1/2 weeks old and has only had the first round of her vaccinations - please do not be offended when I cannot let you pat her. Also, we are still trying to bond with her of course.

Midway through playing in her basket she wedged herself between her cushion and the basket wall and fell into a very deep sleep. Obviously a very uptight puppy - she'd only been with us for a few hours at this stage!

I swear Pepper thinks my old, chatty, furry slippers are related to her. You can see her flecks of lighter colour in this photo - the reason we named her Pepper.

She has the cutest white belly.

She's so difficult to take photos of - you can hardly see her teeny button nose & dolly eyes. We are completely smitten.

Of course some sleep would be handy - but she is toilet trained already! She learns very very quickly.

Completely off the subject - do remember that we'll be closed Tuesday 13th September as we're planning to spend Monday/Tuesday moving things about & squeezing even more in!

Maybe my Mum can puppy sit?

Why we love what we do.

As you've possibly seen we're closed next Tuesday.

That will give us two consecutive days to move things about a tad & add some more items I've been hoarding.

I'll also do a fresh window display - inspired by the cute creations of a young woman from Ipswich QLD whose little brand is called Amelie's World.

If you're lucky enough to live up that way you can pop in to Cultiver & nab yourself some "pick'n'mix" mushrooms!

I bought all that were available in her online store at the time & no, I won't be selling them when they're done adorning our window -

I am planning to use them as Xmas Tree decorations next!

We have also been hoarding some other mushroom cutesy items for weeks & weeks that will be for sale next week + I've been harassing our Handmade Item suppliers to send me new wares + have a LOT of new books on their way from San Fran! (They'll get here eventually! I've not been having the best of luck with deliveries lately!)

Look what Sean & I discovered on our Flyers/Streetpress/YOU stand this morning! A free zine by an anonymous person called The Swirl Chronicles. This is why I love our little shop. You are welcome to sneak zines etc onto this stand (obviously they have to be not yucky or rude or anything-ist!) - it makes us smile.

Street Art Walk

S.A.W (Street Art Walking) is a street art project & collective - run by the gorgeous Simone Sheridan - that creates (temporary and permanent) public art spaces. SAW wants the city to come alive with artworks dispersed throughout the streets, creating a public Art walk for all to enjoy - both Locals and tourists. The project is supported by The Octapod Association and Renew Newcastle.

The goal of S.A.W is to bring back a sense of pride within The Hunter Street Mall in particular, whilst showcasing artistic talent.

Simone is now also a freelance Arts Administrator & Business Broker - an intermediary between businesses & the creative industry. She's available for consultations so just head over to her Facebook page for more details!

Simone popped in last week to give us Blackbirds a lovely gift!

Wowsers!

You know you've got a LOT of parcels when Brian the Courier uses a trolley AND struggles to get that trolley up over the doorstep!

As you can see the new Delilah Devine items have arrived!

Fresh new colours in her scrumptious limited run paper cuts...

Also some really really gorgeous Flying Ducks made from sustainable wood & Vintage Wallpapers. What makes these even more fantastic is that they use those removable tabs to attach to the walls - so you can have them even if you're renting!

I literally would like to keep ALL of them. Luckily for you Sean is the Voice of Reason & has told me that the two trios already installed in our little home are enough!

Oh and I've been so busy this morning that I am yet to open one BUT the latest Frankie has arrived (belatedly unfortunately) and it's the biggest issue ever!

Pepper & her twin sister.

Very very soon, Ms Pepper Puppy will be moving in with us.

She is the daughter of a pure bred Toy Poodle & a pure bred Shih Tzu.

We've called her Ms Pepper as she's mostly black with flecks of brown. We are yet to meet her as she lives in Bathurst but her current owner Steph sends us weekly photos & updates!

At the moment we're busy trying to get her new home ready for her.

I'm a bit excited - can you tell?

I just had to share!

She'll hopefully be happy to hang out in the shop sometimes.

A little visitor...

Sean looked out of our kitchen window early this morning & spotted this gorgeous Australian Native bird trying to enter a hole in our neighbour's wall. It was a Crimson Rosella I do believe.

It pecked a lot of brick away but could still only manage to squeeze itself halfway in.

Then it flew around to perch in the "bath tree" outside our bedroom window and chirp at me. (It's called our "bath tree" because it was planted forever ago in an old bath in the back yard.) I adore it even though it is quite straggly. So do the birds apparently!

I wanted to stay and watch it all morning but Sean reminded me that we had to get on with the day!

We see so many native birds in Cooks Hill!

I just adore living here!

Gosh we've been going through packaging quickly lately!

Which is great - don't get me wrong.

I spent hours (and hours) Gocco printing recycled paper bags yesterday. Today I get to put our exchange policy inside each one before putting them into bundles to cart into the shop and plough through again! It's a glamourous existence.

At least I get to watch Seinfeld while I do it.

Mustn't complain!

We could still be working for huge, soul eating National corporations and considering going postal.

The top of our world...

After breakfast at Frankies we decided to take a leisurely drive around Nobby's Beach then up to the obelisk with my Lomo Fisheye Compact. Obviously the photos I took with her are yet to be processed but I also took some Instagram shots - to share now.

We can see the obelisk from our new lounge room window and so, naturally, I could see our building from up there. I love living back in Cooks Hill where I've lived so many times in so many stages of my life. The suburb has changed in many ways over the years. Unfortunately due to some shortsighted right wing councillors it may soon change a lot more. And not for the better. But I have to keep hoping for a miracle - hope that the Laman Street figs withstand the current stupidity as they have withstood many storms and gale force winds since the ugly fences were erected. Ooops sorry - went off on a tangent there - it's in the forefront of my mind today though as I've had some time to actually relax and look around.

I'll stop now. I know I go to extremes - not blogging for days then blogging a few times all at once! Never been one for "rules".

Monday morning at Frankies Place...

We finally made it to Frankies Place.

It was just as exquisite as we'd imagined; after hearing such rave reviews from our lovely Customers. The lovely staff gave me permission to take a few photos, we were there very early this morning so had the second floor all to ourselves.

The atmosphere is right up our alley and the food is of the same high quality as the aesthetic, presented in a no nonsense, elegant style.

I'm no cafe reviewer (obviously!) but I do recommend you give it a try next time you're on Darby Street - if you can get a table.

I hear they can get quite busy in peak times.

Always a good sign!

I know I'll be getting a copy though as I'm sure, like Frankie itself, it won't be exclusively for one gender. Busy and happy

We've been busy beavers!

Yesterday was our "day off" together.

hee hee hee

We spent it screen printing Anorak Tees for grown ups + Anorak Tees for babies & kiddies + Anorak Teatowels + gocco printing Anorak Cahiers + making badge sets & greeting cards.

Oh yes, then we heat set everything we'd printed.

And you know what? It was really satisfying & enjoyable & lovely.

This morning we popped in nice and early to squeeze it all into stock. Ahhhh satisfaction.

And.... totally off the subject.

This is my new cuckoo clock. I bought it online from ETSY.

ETSY is my downfall I'm afraid.

Usually I buy handmade goodies from there but a Customer suggested I look up clocks in the vintage section and, before you knew it, it was in my basket. Very dangerous - shopping online in your PJs - if you have no self control. Sean hung it in our little kitchen for me this morning. It's one loud ticker!

We had to hang it as far from our bedroom as possible.

Our little apartment is starting to feel more like home everyday.

She's almost black and she was only born around ten days ago and we're not bringing her home until nearly the end of September and (can you tell I'm excited?) we're trying to think of what her name will be! She is one of the gorgeous tiny eensy weensy creatures in the above photo. Awwwwwwwwwww you may get to meet her one day as I hope she'll want to hang out in our shop sometimes.

I can just tell that today is going to be the best Birthday ever!

My sister Jen loves sewing.

That being said, she gets bored easily.

This means that she creates mostly one-off pieces for her two labels Hexsix(6) and Songbird.

This means that you need to like a piece AND have it be the right size for you. Fantastic when it works out that way, as you walk away with a unique creation that none else will be wearing.

Very recently she created three, one-off, "Lolita" style frocks.

The detail is just divine on these delicious dresses.

You may have seen the one pictured below in the window display last week? It was my favourite.

I wasn't alone.

It sold on Tuesday to a very lovely (and beautiful) Artist friend.

Sean told me that it looked just perfect on her too.

She loved it so much that she took a photo of it when she got it home. I pretty much emotionally manipulated her into allowing me to use her photo on my blog, to share with you.

It's been a pretty intense week hasn't it.

Lots of sad things have happened, both overseas and here at home.(Rest in peace Margaret Olley - you absolutely legendary woman you.) It's really kind of made me want to hunker down and stay home.

So I pretty much have.

I've been "doing stuff" just indoors is all. I spent yesterday hand embroidering trios of flying ducks onto burgundy pin cord Alines for Wayward Girl whilst watching bad daytime telly. They're in stock now - no photos as they simply refused to be photographed. I'll be venturing back out into the world tomorrow - well...into our shop which is pretty homelike to me anyway.

I know I'm always saying it but we're blessed in our little Blackbird Universe.

We ordered this Birch Tree fabric after Sophie from That Vintage told us about it & Jen from Hexsix and Songbird Designs sewed the curtain for me as I had no time! No time!

Yes, yes that's where two of the pouffes from Blackbird have disappeared to too!

Of course we have a cuckoo clock at home!!

And yes, yes there are two more Beci Orpin Mobiles - toothy ones this time. And that's a Beci Orpin Folk Bird Cushion hiding behind the stair rails. I'd LOVE a matching blue one! I admit it - I'm smitten with her style!

That was the week that was.

Well then....

I had a rather intense end to the week last week - and blogging was the furthest thing from my mind. Somehow my Business Email Account was hacked into on Friday Morning.

I have literally no idea how they managed it, as I am the most paranoid person that I know when it comes to online security. I used to work for a large bank - in the internet banking department. I encountered a LOT of victims of phishing, hacking, viruses etc etc & thought I knew what to do to make sure I never fell victim to the same things. I don't open emails from people I don't know - let alone reply to or click on links in them. I don't open weird attachments or go to dodgy websites. I have a Mac laptop - known for being much more secure than PCs.

It is a mystery.

I did sign up to a very new social network page (that I shan't name here) mid last week....and granted it access to my Yahoo Account. Needless to say, as someone not entirely prone to blaming coincidence, I have since completely closed that profile after delinking any other accounts from it.

It was a very horrid, negative experience.

BUT

I was so amazed & touched by how many people that received the very obvious SPAM (apparently I was stuck in Aberdeen, Scotland after having robbed at gunpoint & needed money to get home to Australia...) in their inbox took the time to contact me. The shop phone & my mobile were ringing off the hook plus I had a huge amount of Facebook messages & comments + emails to my other email address.

I felt really looked after and cared for.

This really helped me deal with the anxiety & panic I was going through trying to sort out the security issues I had. From a negative situation I was able to take a really positive experience and feel grateful and loved. What a turnaround.

Anyways the pictures I'm sharing with you are of my plate collection that hangs above the sink in our new kitchen and the doily bunting I made months ago that Sean hung above our bed yesterday.

I'm so grateful for our new home and our lovely shop and the lovely people that I have in my life.

VIVA Handmade!

We're so excited to now be stocking VIVA Handmade iPad & iPhone cases! They're handmade by the lovely Leanne - a designer/maker currently based in Canberra. Leanne works mainly with vintage fabrics and makes a range of accessories & other things including these vintage wool iPhone and iPad sleeves. Some pieces from her range are also stocked at Shop Handmade in Canberra, and as of this week, at the scrumptious new handmade emporium - Cultiver in Qld. She grew up in Newcastle so she's a perfect fit for our little store!

Which one to choose??

We only have a few to start with, but they're all gorgeous!

A little ray of sunshine

Popping fresh stock in to our little store always makes me feel a bit warm & fuzzy inside.

Today I had the pleasure of putting in some sweet "Little Folk" & "Vintage Rose" rings into stock.

These were created by the gorgeous Kathryn of Lilac & Snow who lives just a hop skip & a jump from Blackbird.

Aren't they scrumptious!?

So nostalgic.

I'm just feeling a tad disillusioned today.

Newcastle City Council has been making more poor decisions about how to spend (our) money again. In their misguidedness they've decided not to contribute funds to our favourite annual festival:

We can all help in our own little way.

Even $10 would help.

That's about how much your fave magazine costs but you'll get a whole long weekend of inspiration and satisfaction that you've been a part of something truly magnificent.

We've just spent the last two days completing Stocktake & also "spring cleaning" & rearranging our lovely wares!

Everything is new to us there still, so exciting.

He just took this photo of the shadows cast on our kitchen window by our Beci Orpin Teethy Mobile & the tree outside.

You may find it a strange thing to take a photo of (?) but I don't. This is why I just adore my Sean - because I would've done the same thing were I the one at home today.

uh oh I went shopping....

Recently Sean & I had to brave the crowds & go to a big shopping centre. Anyone who knows us is well aware that this is our idea of hell on earth for many, many reasons.

We do it so rarely that it's always a shock to the system for me.

Because we'd wanted to beat the freeway traffic, we arrived way earlier than the opening time of the only shop we wanted to shop in - IKEA for an expedit shelf for my sewing room.

I made the mistake of actually browsing the shops that were open and was amazed by the genericness (is that even a word??) of the items on the shelves. Despite going in to 4 or 5 "different" franchises it felt as though I'd just been into the one giant store.

Except for one shop (that I won't name) that seemed to be selling mass produced items - um let's just say - "inspired" by the creations of independent designers...calling them blatant copies may be a tad strong....or, you know, not!

I think I understand why people are a bit surprised in our shop now when they find things they've not seen elsewhere!

Wowsers - why do people go to those places?

Anyways, going there certainly justified my most recent purchase!

It's a hand made cushion cover with a complete map of the UK where my Sean hails from! I bought it online - from My Bearded Pigeon who I've been following on Facebook for a while now. Buying handmade online is very justifiable I reckon!

Made from 100% certified organic cotton - the printed fabric is exclusive to My Bearded Pigeon and not available anywhere else in the world! Now that is the kind of shopping that makes my day.

Layer upon layer

Today is my beautiful Sister Jen's Birthday.

So off to "the 'gog" we went. Well Mum & I did at least - Sean had to stay and keep the home fires burning. ie run Blackbird.

We had a scrumptious brunch at the one and only Cafe Dungog then strolled happily along Dowling Street - which is Dungog's "main drag." I was pretty darn impressed to see that some crafty folk had gone nuts wrapping poles & trees with their swish knits.

I thought that you'd like to see,

so I took some snaps to share with you:

Dungog is (in my humble opinion) already one of the most beautiful places in the world, these just added another layer to the lushness. The fresh air always wipes me out though - so I'm not going to have the most productive of afternoons now that I'm home sweet home.

Yesterday was a truly delightful day at Blackbird Corner.

We had a steady stream of completely gorgeous & supportive people through our doors all day.

Days like those just really reinforce that we've made the right decision to stick it out here!

We certainly aren't doing this to make our fortune...

We've both worked for massive companies (in what we call our "past lives" hee hee) where we've earned more than triple what we earn now but our souls were being utterly devoured.

It IS immensely satisfying sharing our creations & those of our friends, with people that appreciate Handmade.

Sharing our days with people who are "into" what we are "into" is just a complete luxury.

One of my extremely lovely customers (who is turning 25 on the 25th of June and lives in a home that is number 25 too!) slipped this card under our door this morning to thank me for a lovely visit yesterday!

Needless to say - I welled up.

How nice is that?!

Seriously!!

If this is the "type" of person we "attract" well then ,

I'm a very happy camper!

While I'm here, this cracks me up so I'll share...

On Tuesday at 4pm I decided to join in the discounting fun on Darby Street for the end of the financial year & discount our gorgeous LOMO products. (Fear not we are not stopping selling them-there are just some exciting changes afoot I'm told!)

Anyway, on the right in the above photo is the dodgy sign I made. Sean was mortified by it's "crassness" & complete lack of style. He immediately sat down & designed the one on the left. Then walked in the torrential rain (Wednesday morning was horrific in Newy) to Officeworks to organise it's printing. Of course they couldn't do it immediately (sigh) so he had to walk back there in the afternoon to collect it!

That is dedication.

I am blessed.

We've sat them together atop our new sideboard in our very white loungeroom. Sorry about the mess but we're still settling in!

I couldn't crop the photo as that would have removed the Jordan Crane Prints that I completely adore!

Inside that old wooden radio shell we have two Speakrboxes.

Playing our music from ipod/iphones out of that casing is just a lovely touch I think!

As you may know already, Sean & I moved home last Monday.

We are now blessed to live in our very favourite Newcastle suburb - Cooks Hill!

Very exciting indeed.

We're more than half unpacked already & are just (patiently) waiting for our (lovely) builder to finish creating Sean's new screen printing room now. Once that happens then we can move all of his (boxes & boxes of) stuff out of my (teeny) new workspace and I can settle in too!

Then maybe we can get creating & pour lovely new items into our beloved store!

Luckily our consigners have been most forthcoming with their creations & kept Blackbird full to the brim with scrumptiousness!!

We'd be utterly lost without them.
